Les cartes ont joué un rôle crucial dans l’histoire américaine, depuis les stratégies d’exploration et d’appropriation de l’époque coloniale jusqu’aux préoccupations environnementales contemporaines. Ce séminaire s’intéressera à des auteurs et autrices qui ont eu recours à des cartes bien réelles et à l’influence de ces documents sur le travail d’écriture. Le séminaire mettra l’accent sur trois aspects principaux : l’analyse littéraire des textes eux-mêmes ; l’examen d’archives manuscrites inédites de certains auteurs et autrices ; et la découverte de textes critiques et théoriques récents. 

This research seminar examines the interactions between literary texts and cartographic documents. Maps have played a key role in American history, most of the time as instruments of discovery, exploration, appropriation, colonization, negotiation, and displacement, but sometimes also as tools of resistance and environmental awareness. As such, they have profoundly shaped the ways in which literary texts have thought about space and geographical knowledge in the North American context. To explore these interactions, the seminar will focus on three major aspects: the literary analysis of the texts themselves; the study of previously unpublished archival documents used by the authors themselves; and the discovery of recent theoretical and critical approaches.
